Welcome to my garden. I’m Emily, a gardener growing organic edibles and flowers in my tiny community garden plot in Plant Hardiness Zone 7b. Though I have some training in flower farming, agroecology, and permaculture, I’m not an expert; I’m a curious hobbyist who gardens for the sheer joy of it. It matters to me that I understand the science and ecology of my own patch of land, and I’ll share those lessons with you here. Each year, I learn a little more about how to grow a garden that’s more productive, more sustainable, and more beautiful.
Gardening has much to teach us about how to live a good life. Some planting experiments work and others fail — but always the stakes are low. In gardening, as in life, what matters is the doing of it all. Gardening grounds us. It slows us down. It forces us to see both the details and the big picture. And it imbues us with the power to perform small miracles. Gardening offers a gentle credo in this harsh world. My newsletter will also explore the many salubrious benefits of this hobby, and why we humans have continued this art for millennia.
Come along with me as I chronicle my growing season and all that it teaches me. I’ll be learning new techniques, familiarizing myself with different plant species, and making peace with the many other critters who pass through my garden gate. I hope you’ll join me.
